3 Month Baby Sleep: Schedule, Wake Windows and Preparing for the Big Change
Three months is the sweet spot between newborn chaos and the 4 month regression. Many babies start showing longer night stretches, more predictable naps, and genuine smiles. Enjoy it — and use this window to build good habits.

Building Good Habits Before the 4 Month Regression
3 months is your last easy window before sleep architecture permanently changes at 4 months. Use it to:
- Practice drowsy-but-awake: At least once per day, put baby down while drowsy but eyes still open. Even if they need help after, this plants the seeds of self-settling.
- Establish a bedtime routine: Bath → feed → song → dark room. Same sequence every night. At 3 months, the brain starts associating the sequence with sleep.
- Gradually move feeds away from sleep: Feed baby, then play for a bit, then sleep. This breaks the nurse-to-sleep association before it becomes entrenched.
The 4 month regression hits around 3.5–4.5 months. Babies who have some experience falling asleep on their own handle it dramatically better. You don't need full sleep training now — just practice.
FAQ
My 3 month old was sleeping well and suddenly started waking more — is this the regression?
If baby is 3.5–4 months: yes, probably. The 4 month regression can start as early as 3.5 months. If younger: could be a growth spurt (usually 3 days), illness, or a wake window shift.
When can I start a real sleep schedule?
At 3 months, wake-window-based scheduling works better than clock-based. By 4–5 months, most babies' circadian rhythm has matured enough for a more predictable clock-based schedule.
