At 2, many parents hear "they're old enough to drop the nap." That's a myth — only 8% of 2-year-olds don't need a nap. Most do until 3–3.5 years. Here's everything you need to know.
For most 2-year-olds: yes. Research data: only 8% of 2-year-olds are ready to drop the nap. By age 3: 43% are done. By age 4: 73%.
Signs your 2-year-old still needs a nap:
If toddler refuses the nap: introduce "quiet time" — 45–60 minutes in a dark room with a book or quiet toy. No screens. Many "nap refusers" fall asleep during quiet time. Even if they don't, the rest period helps.
With a nap, total sleep should be 11–14 h. If night is only 9h and nap is 1–1.5h, total is 10–10.5h — on the low end but possible. If no nap and only 9h night: this child is likely undertired or has a sleep environment issue to fix.
Baby Sleep Planner adapts to the 1-nap schedule and helps maintain the right wake windows.
