Nap Refusal at 2: What to Do

If toddler refuses the nap: introduce "quiet time" — 45–60 minutes in a dark room with a book or quiet toy. No screens. Many "nap refusers" fall asleep during quiet time. Even if they don't, the rest period helps.

Daycare without nap: On daycare days without nap, compensate with earlier bedtime (6:30–7:00 PM). This prevents chronic overtiredness from accumulating.
Nap transition: Most 2-year-olds are not ready to drop the nap. If your child is genuinely ready, see the nap transition guide for step-by-step instructions.

FAQ

My 2-year-old sleeps only 9 hours at night — is that normal?

With a nap, total sleep should be 11–14 h. If night is only 9h and nap is 1–1.5h, total is 10–10.5h — on the low end but possible. If no nap and only 9h night: this child is likely undertired or has a sleep environment issue to fix.
