2 Month Baby Sleep: Schedule, Wake Windows and Why Night Waking Is Normal

At 2 months, your baby is becoming more alert and social — which means they stay awake longer. Sleep is still unpredictable, night waking is normal, and there's plenty you can do to gently shape better habits.

Why Night Waking Is Normal at 2 Months

When does it get better? Most babies start doing a 4–5 hour first stretch by 3 months. A 6–8 hour stretch typically comes by 5–6 months with the right sleep foundations.

First Steps Toward Better Sleep

1. Distinguish day and night

Day: bright light, normal noise, active interaction. Night: dark, quiet, minimal stimulation during feeds. This accelerates circadian rhythm development.

2. White noise

55–65 dB of continuous white noise. Mimics the womb environment and masks household sounds that wake baby at cycle transitions.

3. Start a brief bedtime routine

Bath → feed → song → dark room. 10–15 minutes maximum. Consistency of sequence matters more than length.

4. Practice drowsy-but-awake once a day

End the routine, put baby down while eyes are still partially open. If they fuss immediately, help them. Just the attempt counts — it starts building the neural pathway for self-settling.

FAQ

My 2 month old only sleeps on me — is that a problem?

At 2 months, contact naps are common and normal. Try transferring to the crib 15 minutes after falling asleep (when they're in deeper sleep and arms relax). Warm the crib mattress first — cold surfaces often trigger waking.

Can I sleep train at 2 months?

Full sleep training isn't recommended before 4–5 months — the brain isn't ready. But drowsy-but-awake practice and a consistent bedtime routine are appropriate now and create great foundations.
