12 Month Baby Sleep: Regression, Schedule and Nap Transition
Happy first birthday — and welcome to the 12-month regression. Three things happen simultaneously: walking, first words, and the beginning of the 2-to-1 nap transition window.
Sleep Norms at 12 Months
The 12-Month Regression: Why Now
- Walking. The biggest neurological project of year one — brain consolidates motor patterns during sleep.
- First words. Vocabulary triples. Language processing requires enormous brain resources.
- 2-to-1 nap signs begin. Many babies start refusing one nap — but it's too early to drop it.
Don't rush the 1-nap transition at 12 months. Average transition age: 14–18 months. Too early = chronic overtiredness, worse night sleep.
Signs Ready vs Not Ready for 1 Nap
| Ready ✅ | Not ready ❌ |
| Nap refusal for 2+ consistent weeks | Refusal only during regression |
| Gets to evening without overtiredness | Falls apart by 5 PM without 2nd nap |
| Age 14 months+ | Under 13 months |
FAQ
My 12-month-old suddenly wakes 5x at night — regression?
Very likely yes. Duration: 2–4 weeks. Keep your schedule and don't introduce new sleep associations to cope — they'll outlast the regression.
